Woman washing face

For oily skin

If your skin gets shiny throughout the day and you often have breakouts, then you have oily skin. Follow this skin care routine morning and night to control excessive oil and acne.

  • Cleanse - Use a foaming face wash that is designated for oily skin. Work it up into a healthy lather to remove dirt and oil accumulated on your skin. Rinse your skin thoroughly with warm water.
  • Tone - Soak a cotton ball in astringent lotion and wipe over your entire face. Astringent (or toner) should cause a cool, refreshing feeling, but shouldn't burn your skin.
  • Moisturize - Even oily skin needs moisture. Select a light, water-based moisturizer that isn't thick or heavy. Dab it on the areas of your face that tend to be drier (normally on the cheeks and around the eyes). Allow the moisturizer to absorb into your skin, then use a clean tissue to blot away the excess product.

Twice a week, use an exfoliating product to slough away dead skin cells and unclog pores. Monthly, splurge on a salon facial to get a deep cleansing that will help reduce excess oil and improve skin tone.

Never squeeze or lance pimples. Reduce inflammation and swelling by applying an ice cube covered with a thin cloth directly to your pimple. Treat blemishes with an OTC spot treatment twice a day to speed healing. Only apply product to the affected area to avoid over-drying your skin.
