Switching Up The Seasons

Redecorating from season to season is not as extravagant as one might think. With just a few design changes your room's look can reflect summer, fall, winter and spring. Find out how and start the transition!

"The colours of spring are crisp and pastel; summer we associate with hot colours; fall brings us earth tones; and winter colours are warm and muted," says Tracy Kundell of Avalon Interiors, based in Thornhill, Ont.

Material for seasons

"Toss cushions or a fabric square against a solid colour. Fabric says a lot about seasons. In winter, I associate heavier fabrics like leather, velvet and chenille in prints of plaid. For fall, a tapestry paisley or tweed.

Spring is great for lightweight chintz or silk in gingham or floral designs. And for summer, silk with a beach stripe," says Kundell.

Over winter we tend to accumulate more, so once spring arrives Kundell suggests editing clutter. Also, switch accessories such as frames and flower containers from heavy metal and wood, to light wire and wicker.

Flowers for certain seasons

Kundell says flowers and greenery are the greatest way to express the change of seasons in your decor. Spring has lilacs, daisies, hyacinths and tulips. In the summer, you can choose fresh-cut flowers from your garden or calla lilies and hydrangeas. In the fall, there are mums, curly willow and red dogwood. For the winter, try red dogwood with pinecones.

From cold to cool

When winter turns into spring, add a light and airy slipcover, blanket or throw on a chair or sofa. Those with two-sided drapes can reverse them to show the lightest color. Those with layered window treatments, such as side panels over a blind or sheer, can remove one of the layers letting more of the sun shine in.
