To Bring For Labour
Having a labour bag packed and ready to go can go a long way in easing your mind about the big day. Many mom-to-be's opt for having two bags ready for the occasion: one with the items that may be required for labour and delivery, while the other is filled with things needed for postpartum care. The choice of one bag or two is up to you, but here is a rundown of the items you may want to consider packing to help ensure your labour is as comfortable as possible.
Every labour and birth is different. It could be short or long, difficult or easy, vaginal or a C-section, but whatever it is, be prepared by packing a bag in advance, then relax knowing you'll have everything you need for your special delivery day! Read on for items you will probably want to bring along.
- A robe or sweater to keep yourself covered up and cozy.
- Slippers or non-slip socks.
- The hospital will supply you with a gown, but bring your own if it will help you feel more comfortable. Keep it sleeveless or short-sleeved to make it easy to run IVs and use blood pressure machines.
- A small bag of personal items: hair bands or elastics to keep your hair off your face, a toothbrush and toothpaste, lip balm and moisturizer, etc.
- Refillable bottles for water and ice chips.
- Healthy snacks.
- A personal music player loaded with soothing music.
- Massage oil.
- Magazines or newspapers.
- A baby name book if you haven't decided on one yet.
- Important identification, such as a hospital card.
- Anything sentimental you envisioned bringing along, such as a childhood teddy bear or a framed picture of loved ones.
For your partner or coach
Yes, this day is primarily about your well-being and the health of your new baby, but let's face it: Having a tired, bored or hungry partner won't make the day any easier! Here are some things to pack for your coach/partner.
- A fully charged camera and/or video camera with empty memory cards.
- A list of contacts with phone numbers and email addresses. With all the excitement, it's very easy to forget a phone number!
- Personal toiletries and a change of clothes for freshening up during a long labour.
- Refillable water bottles.
- Easy, portable snacks that will keep your partner's energy level up.
- Money for parking.
- A book or a few magazines.
